Leather bag care guide

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Cautions to consider regarding your new bag.

The bag might stain your clothes

Dye transfer can sometimes be a problem associated with the darker crazy horse leather, it usually happens with new leather products. To help prevent color transference,

  1. Try to keep your bag away from anything wet.
  2. Care is needed when using a new dark crazy horse bag; it is recommended to “break in the bag” (merely using it often and airing it well!) before any rubbing contact with light clothing.
  3. Using waxed leather protector, or color lock waterproof spray for nubuck, suede & fabrics.
  4. Just wearing dark clothes in the first month., after a few wears the finish will stop rubbing off.

In the case of dye transfer

Dye transfer from leather to clothing is considered to be a “loose dye” stain. These are loose dyes or dyes that are on the surface of the fibers and can be removed with a few products that are readily available. An Oxy based stain removal powder will get the dye out.

Natural leather Aroma

New leather bags may have that special aroma. It is part of the rich experience associated with buying genuine leather. Because of the production process that uses natural oils rather than chemicals the aroma can be a little overwhelming for some. Here are some tips for getting rid of this leather smell quickly.

  • Baking Powder – A light dusting of baking powder inside your leather bag will soak up any moisture, which can cause the scent. It can be messy though and leave white marks behind, so be very careful and vigilant if doing this.
  • Newspaper - Old newspapers or packing paper are more porous than leather, which makes them excellent at absorbing odors. If you want to get rid of those odors from brand-new leather items quickly, you can pack them in newspapers or packing paper. The fibers of the paper act as wicks that lift the odors from the leather and are also an excellent way of preserving the untreated reverse surfaces of leather items. Make sure that the leather item is completely dry, and that you're using dry newspapers. Newspapers are more effective than office paper, because the fibers are looser and that the paper itself is softer than other kinds of paper you may have around the house. Pack the leather items in paper overnight to draw out most of the odors.
  • Treating Scratches in Natural leather- Often you will find authenticating marks in leather. This is especially true of the crazy horse leather. Typical are light scratches on the surface these are hallmarks that make your bag unique. This adds to the delightful appeal of distressed leather. However, if you prefer, these can sometimes be reduced just by rubbing it with your finger. Alternatively, a drop of vegetable oil, sunflower oil, baby oil or rapeseed on cotton wool rubbed over the scratch can reduce this appearance (if you really want to!)

If you look after your bag, it will serve you for years!
